History
Batman '66: The Lost Episode
This section of the history covers certain events of the Batman '66 comic series and its related spin-offs that partially contradict the later animated movies Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders and Batman vs. Two-Face. The origin stories of Two-Face, Hugo Strange, and Harley Quinn, as originally established in the comic continuation, were ignored and retconned by the movies. Therefore, all or part of this section may no longer be valid for the continuity of the Batman '66 universe.
Before he became Two-Face, Dent was a respected young District Attorney and "one of the most honest men in Gotham." When Harvey Dent was prosecuting "Lucky" Maroni during a trial at the Gotham City Courthouse, the mob boss suddenly attempted to eliminate the DA by throwing a bottle of acid towards him. Batman, who was present at the trial, leapt in front of Dent to shield him with the Batsuit's cape, but was not able to prevent some of the acid from splashing on the left side of Harvey's face, severely scarring it in the process. Even though the surgeons at Gotham Hospital tried their best, they were unable to undo the disfigurement. Back on the streets of Gotham, the people would now look at Dent in horror whenever they saw him, eventually causing him to snap and turn to a life of crime. He assumed the name Two-Face and scarred one side of Maroni's lucky two-headed coin. Dent proceeded to plan crimes and determine his actions on the toss of his coin. Whenever the coin landed on the disfigured side, Dent would keep the goods he stole, but when it landed on the unmarked side, he would return the stolen loot with interest.[1] Two-Face's crimes, whenever he committed them, were always based on the number two in some way.
Batman vs. Two-Face
In an alternate telling of the previously described events, District Attorney Harvey Dent was a close friend of millionaire Bruce Wayne and eventually became Two-Face under different circ*mstances. Hugo Strange, a scientist working for Gotham State Penitentiary, invented an Evil Extractor that would allow him to extract evil energies from criminals and supposedly reform them in the process. Harvey Dent, Batman, Robin and Warden Crichton were among the people present at the penitentiary when Strange and his assistant tried to present the capabilities of the machine by attempting to extract the combined evil from the brains of Joker, Penguin, Riddler, Egghead and Mr. Freeze. However, the experiment failed when the machine overloaded with the massive amount of evil energies, causing the collection vat that stored the evil gas to explode. Batman attempted to shield Dent with the cape of his Batsuit, but the substance was still sprayed directly into a part of Harvey's face, disfiguring it on the left side and transforming him into Two-Face, a criminal obsessed with duality who began to rely on the toss of a coin to decide his actions. He then went on an enormous crime spree in Gotham City and attempted to kill the Dynamic Duo on numerous occasions.[2]

- This version of the character is exclusive to the continuity of the television series Batman, its tie-in comic book series, related live-action movie and animated movies, Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders and Batman vs. Two-Face. It is an adaptation of Two-Face. The original character was created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane and first appeared in Detective Comics #66.
- In the animated movie Batman vs. Two-Face, Two-Face was voiced by William Shatner.
- The character was originally meant to be in the 1960s TV series and to be portrayed by Clint Eastwood, but the show was canceled before the story made it to the screen. The character was meant to be changed from the District Attorney of the comic books to a TV news reporter whose face was scarred after an explosion from a malfunctioning camera. Ben Nye would have had to design a new makeup format for Two-Face had the character made it to television.
- Two-Face made his first official appearance in the continuity of the 1966 Batman television series in the comic one-shot Batman '66: The Lost Episode #1. However, the origin story established in the comic was later completely ignored and retconned for the 2017 animated movie Batman vs. Two-Face.
