lex Twister Rips Through County Grayson County was hit last Wednesday afternoon around 4:00 PM by raging tornados The funnel cloud first touched down in Tan Yard a small community on the Grayson Butler County line causing severe damage to the homes and landscape The twister then lifted circled around Leitchfield and touched down a second time in the Mullbery lats area This Is the area of some of the best farm land and the winds took barns and other farm buildings as the major toll The tornado then took a path north near St Paul still leaving destruction mark then leaving the county near the Grayson Breck Co line The State Police Troopers Leo Mudd Glenn Tilford and Dave Norris filed a report Wednesday estimating the total damage to Grayson County to be over $250000 Those sub staining damages are: Willie Howard Big Clifty Ky $30000 Aaron Adolph Caln Big Clifty Ky $15000 Bill McCarthy Big Clifty Ky $25000 JH Van Meter Clarkson Ky $2000 Hobson Board Leitchfield Ky $3000 Benny Johnson Rt 1 Leitch field Ky $3000 Herman Johnson Rt 1 Leitchfield Ky $300000 Arlo Dennis Rt1 Leitchfield Ky $2000 William Drake Rt 1 Leitchfield Ky $30000 John Day Caneyville Ky $50000 County Judge CB Bratcher said "If anyone knowing or having damages not reported should do so immediately in order to obtain possible federal aid for Grayson County as a disaster area Early reports Thursday following the Wednesday cat astrophe listed several Ken tucky Counties designated as a disaster area by the President Grayson County was not included in this original list although Gov ord had declared it at a state level Leitchfield Mayor Albert Thomason told Grayson County News riday he had been in contact with Senator Marlow Cook in Washington and was informed that Grayson County had been added to the disaster list In addition to the two major damaged areas heavy winds surrounding the actual tornado cloud did considerable damage to many homes and buildings throughout the county and it will take several months to restore the county to pre storm status Although Grayson County suffered severe property damages there were no deaths reported as a result of the tornado and only a few minor injuries However it was reported that one Grayson County re sident was killed in a tornado elsewhere Mrs Ada Mercer was killed in the Brandenburg storm and Mrs Lillie Quiggins a former resident of Hudson was AGE This chicken house belonging to Hobson Board was just one of the many farm buildings in the mullbery lats area that were completely destroyed by the severe winds bringing the total damage estimate to over $250000 Alley Asks Utilities Commission to ait on Rebate Solution Local Red Cross Chapter Offers Storm Aid City and County Sign Radio Contract GLASSco*ck ORD mCTWINC Grayson County's Red Cross Chapter Chairman Tom Ellis told Grayson County News this week that Red Cross assistance The cost of the proposed remodeling of the present fac ility is two and a quarter million dollars with approxi mately half coming from the voted twenty year tax bond The hospital will put up $220000 and the Hill Burton share will be $750000 little head wav toward solving the problem of rebate to the Moon and Thom agon Con The Leitchfield Utilities Com mission at their regular meeting Thursday night made walk and TW Netherton was the oldest walker There are several other prizes to be awarded These will be announced later after tabulations are made Small prize drawings will be held April 23 Murrel Hom Grayson County Campaign Chairman for the March of Dimes reminds all the Walkers April 20 is the deadline for collecting and mailing their money Hom also said he wanted to offer a special thanks to the many businesses and in dividuals for their donations and help Aside from the normal number of blisters and minor sun burns there were no catastrophes re ported for the walkers and most of them went home with a feeling of accomplisment and looking forward to adding 20 more miles to their hiking log book next year Approximately 675 eager walkers assembled in a down town parking lot Saturday to set out on a 20 mile hike to earn a total of $1636890 pledged this year to the March of Dimes Walk A Thon This was the second walk for Grayson County and this total exceeded last year by over $4000 The 675 walkers were also walking for several individual prizes in additon to their pledges John Mudd was the prize winner for having the most money pledged John had $1290 in pledges and for his efforts he won a stereo tape player and two tickets to Opryland Clarkson School won the plaque for the school with the most walkers Pat Skaggs of Indianapolis won the prize for traveling the fartherest to participate in the Hospital Head Announces Time Table for New New Business Opens for any emergency needs such as food clothing shelter etc for county tornado victims will be available A distribution center will be announced as soon as possible Ellis said "anyone needing immediate aid should contact Mrs Louise Spurrier by phoning 259 3787 The Red Cross will make a county wide plea this week end for the tornado victims The local chapter has ask the churches to make a special collection this Sunday for this purpose Also the school classes and organizations will conduct a door to door campaign to help the Red Cross cause The local Jaycees plan to do their part for the Red Cross effort by maning road blocks over the week end Everyone is asked to make any donations possible to help the unfortunate tornado victim of Grayson County Monday the Leltcniield and County authorities finally ex ecuted a contract for county radio service after several previous attempts revisions and tenative approvals Both Mayor Albert Thomason ard County Judge CB Bratcher signed into effect the four year contract whereby the city agrees to furnish the County 24 hour police radio service The contract calls for the County to pay one half the total monthly operating expenses and maintain their own portable mobile units The ity will have full manage ment and control of the operation to include selling salaries hiring and firing inal agreement of the two parties came after County Attorney Dave Vickery suggested a revision to be made in the original contract whereby at anytime the County law officers aredissatisfiedwiththe service they can file a grievance with the iscal Court who in turn the iscal Court will Investigate and if deemed justified the County can cancel the contract and give a written notice of cancellation of pay ments and obligations to the City At a regular quarterly meet ing of the Hospital oundation Board and the Medical Staff Hospital Administrator Russell Hackley told the group that if the application for Hill Burton unds is accepted construction of the addition and remodeling will be completed by March 1 1975 and be ready for use by March 15 Hackley had a optimistic attitude about the Hill Burton money and said that things look good at this point CE TOMMY AND EDDIE GLASSco*ck open ed the doors on their business Glassco*ck ord Tractor Inc last week The new tractor dealership is located in the old skating rink building on Hwy 62 East just beyond the stock yards CE says he intends to offer the farmer a complete service department and has Bud Skaggs as parts manager tractors Commissioner Otis Arnold mide a motion to pay the $22000 settlement but his motion died with no second after Chair man Alden Alley suggested no action be taken until a final agreement is reached between the Commission and City Council as the the power and authorities of each body and a report of exact cost of the sewer line installation from This marks the second time Alley has halted proceedings pending clarification of author ity Joe Watson a city employee was named to replace retiring Allan Metcalf asmaintenance foreman by the Utilities Com mission There has been some ques tion as to whom would re place Metcalf and there were several other names mentioned prior to meeting Republican Leaders to Meet Saturday There will be a meeting of the Grayson County Republican Party Executive Committee Saturday April 13 at 2:00 PM in the Courthouse ollowing the executive
