Dial M for Murder

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Dial M for Murder may be slightly off-peak Hitchco*ck, but by any other standard, it's a sophisticated, chillingly sinister thriller -- and one that boasts an unforgettable performance from Grace Kelly to boot.

Dial M for Murder | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Derwent May Sight & Sound Ray Milland is sufficiently suave as the misbegotten genius, and Hitchco*ck has moved about very sure-footedlv on what continues to be for the most part just a stage. Apr 16, 2020 Full Review Dial M for Murder | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Charlotte O'Sullivan London Evening Standard Ray Milland is great as cold fish Tony Wendice, a former tennis pro who plans to bump off his adulterous wife. Still, Grace Kelly is mis-cast (or misdirected) as the spouse in question. Rated: 3/5 Jul 26, 2013 Full Review Dial M for Murder | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Peter Bradshaw Guardian The set-up is ingenious and the "kill" scene genuinely thrilling. Rated: 4/5 Jul 25, 2013 Full Review Dial M for Murder | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Danielle Solzman Solzy at the Movies Dial M for Murder is never short of suspense and the master of suspense's first of three films with Grace Kelly is among the top tier of Hitchco*ck's filmography. Rated: 4/5 Jan 3, 2023 Full Review Dial M for Murder | Rotten Tomatoes (5) Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies The story never trips over itself and Hitchco*ck let’s Knott’s script do most of the heavy lifting. Rated: 4.5/5 Aug 20, 2022 Full Review Dial M for Murder | Rotten Tomatoes (6) Alan Jones Starburst It is probably the only 3D film that truly realizes the potential of what such a misused medium can offer a talented director. Kevin Absolutely one of Hitchco*cks best movies, seen it 25 times and it never gets old. One of Hitchco*ck's best! Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/08/24 Full Review Kesava Dharshan Exquisite detail in every point of solving the crime. Blown away by the way this story moves, packed with amazing performance. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/04/24 Full Review A R A fun sort of who-dunnit with the awesome twist that the first scene tells us who, when, where, and why, and we spend the rest of the film watching it go awry. I like that the boyfriend is set up as the one who will figure it all out, but still the cheeky detective is a bit ahead of him. It's fun in a classic Clue sort of way, with a couple novel touches to keep it interesting. Gene Kelley is a vision, but her casting isn't ideal - with a less than passable British accent.Overall, worth a casual watch, but not necessarily a rewatch.
